Origin Story
"Stay curious, stay useful, and maybe you'll stay alive in that wide and wild world. You've got this."
Renée came here from an isolated island in parts unknown shortly after her mentor and guardian, Rusty, passed away. While mourning and sorting through his belongings, she discovered a series of letters from a man in a foreign army claiming to be her father. Inquisitive and rash, she left her old life behind in search of the man that made her a half-blooded bastard after reading his last station was near Bicolline.
However, the warring lands of the known world were a cultural shock to her system given her peaceful life farming and scribing. With only a loose command of the local tongue limiting her prospects as a scribe, she could barely rub 2 Solar together by the end of the first month. So when she befriended Claire Odell, she clung to her for direction and belonging. On Odell's advice she joined the army as a member of the light infantry and served for a year until Claire left active service to pursue the arts. Renée followed her out as a matter of course, but still relies on mercenary work to get by to this day. Soon they met Helena and formed the independent militia group, Babbits, shortly before joining the guild of Militum in Kazarun.
She has long since abandoned the idea that her father yet lives, but stays in Mundus despite the lack of direction. Perhaps won over by the people of Terres du Sud? They are welcoming, warm, and open minded--a far cry from the pitying eyes and snide remarks in her isolated home town. Or simply because Rusty isn't there to share a pint and a tale. So far from home, she continues to embody the lessons he taught her despite her change in vocation.
"You probably have heard the saying, 'it's important to care, but be careful of caring too much'. When we over-invest, our egos can get in the way, and, as our work is so collective, we simply cannot let things go there. We don’t have time to get all emotional about our failures, all we see is the challenge before us to get it right, and not make that mistake again. And eventually, if you do that enough: it WILL start to become easy... or at least easier. I have faith in you. I have faith that any rough edges can be worn off.
Before we begin our lesson in earnest, remember: BE IN THE ROOM. We are here to learn, to inspire each other, to inspire ourselves, to be changed by the learning, and what we are learning. The walls of the classroom are—for me—sacred. When we enter that space, it is a context, worthy of our deep respect, and a container for our hopes, dreams, goals and ambitions collectively..."
