Origin Story
Kadavar doesn’t remember much about herself before meeting the Black Roses. It’s why she’s always vague when asked about her past; or who Kadavar really is. The truth is, she simply doesn’t know.
All she remembers is the cold, a bone-deep and suffocating darkness. Then, slowly the taste of stale blood in her mouth and the scent of soil filling her nose. The sensation of being crushed under a solid weight and the animalistic urge to be free of it. To escape. She eventually clawed her way out of the earth, dragging herself free from its grasp, only to emerge from what could barely qualify as a grave, completely unmarked, shallow, and hidden deep within a forest far from any path or road.
She had no idea how long she’d been buried there, or who had put her in the ground to begin with. Any time she tried to reach for a memory, it dissolved, escaping like smoke caught in the wind.
With no sense of where she was or who she had been, she simply walked. Aimlessly, wordlessly. Her body moved as if it remembered something she didn’t. Time blurred; days, weeks, maybe longer until even the idea of time lost all meaning. There was only the need to keep moving, searching; only for what she didn’t quite know.
It was nearly dusk when she finally stumbled across it, after trudging for uncounted days. A camp. People. They were the first people she’d seen since clawing her way out of the earth. At first, she stayed hidden, watching with caution. Not sure if these people would be eager to put her back into the ground. But as she crept closer, she sensed no threat. The air was filled with laughter, firelight, and warmth.
As she approached cautiously, she was surprised when they welcomed her, a stranger, with open arms and no questions asked. They offered food, companionship, and a place by the fire. And when dawn came, so did an invitation to travel with them, at least until she felt ready to walk her own path again. And so she traveled with them, got to know them, learned their names, their values, their stories. Camped and fought alongside them long enough to understand that these people, this ragtag group of misfits from all walks of life were where she wanted to continue to be. They had shown her a kindness, gave her a place to plant roots and start anew. She may not remember her past; and she hopes one day she can remember who and where she came from, but for now in the company of the Black Roses, she’s begun to understand who she is. Not just a shadow of something lost, but something new.
Here, among misfits and outcasts, she’s found more than just survival, she’s found belonging, a family, and a banner worth fighting under.
