Origin Story
The Origin of Varyn Blackthorn: The Black Knight of Eternal Darkness
Varyn Blackthorn wasn’t born to noble blood, nor did he grow up in the shadow of a powerful lineage. He came from the outskirts of the cursed Albase Domain, a land where the sun rarely pierced the thick, ominous clouds. His early life was one of hardship, scraping by in a small village where death was more common than kindness, and war raged endlessly across the land. Albase was known for its dark history—a place where ancient magic lingered in the soil, and the line between life and death often blurred.
Varyn had little interest in the lives of lords and kings. He was a survivor, plain and simple. As soon as he was strong enough to wield a sword, he left his home and joined a band of mercenaries. The world outside his village was no less cruel, but at least it offered opportunity. Varyn quickly proved his worth on the battlefield. His skill with the blade was unmatched, and his cold, calculating nature made him an efficient warrior. He fought for gold, not glory. Each job, each campaign was a step toward his one goal: earning enough to leave the bloodshed behind and live in peace.
Years passed, and Varyn’s name became known across the warring kingdoms. He had fought in countless battles, toppled rebel lords, and sacked cities. He was known as the Blackthorn, a name he earned not for his bloodline, but for the darkness that seemed to follow him wherever he went. His life was one of violence and death, but he always believed that once he had enough gold, he could walk away from it all.
Then came the fateful day that changed everything.
Varyn and his company of mercenaries were hired by a nobleman from deep within Albase, a mysterious figure who offered a sum of gold far beyond anything Varyn had ever seen. The task seemed simple enough: clear out an ancient ruin that was said to harbor rebels. But the nobleman’s true intentions were hidden beneath layers of deceit. The ruin was no ordinary stronghold—it was a place of dark power, steeped in the ancient curse that had haunted Albase for centuries.
As Varyn and his men entered the ruin, they were met not by rebels, but by shadows. The deeper they went, the more the air itself seemed to grow heavier, colder. The walls whispered with the voices of the long dead, and the ground trembled beneath their feet. At the heart of the ruin lay a relic—a black sword, pulsing with a dark, malevolent energy. It was known as Nightreaver, a weapon cursed by an ancient sorcery long forgotten.
When Varyn took hold of the sword, the curse was unleashed. His men screamed as shadows tore through them, their bodies dissolving into dust. Varyn tried to let go of the sword, but it was too late—Nightreaver had chosen him. The weapon fused with his very soul, and the curse began to take hold. Varyn’s skin grew cold, his armor darkened, and his eyes gleamed with an unnatural light. His body became a vessel for the ancient evil that had been sealed away in the ruin.
In that moment, Varyn Blackthorn ceased to be a man. He became something else: a creature bound to darkness, unable to walk in the light. The curse of Nightreaver tied him to the shadows, and from that day forward, sunlight became his greatest enemy. Even the softest rays of dawn would burn his flesh and drive him to the brink of madness. Only under the cover of night or in the dim twilight of dusk could Varyn move freely.
Desperate to break free from the curse, Varyn sought out sorcerers, priests, and scholars, but none could help him. The sword had bound itself too deeply to his soul. Wherever he went, the darkness followed, and the legend of the Black Knight began to grow. He could no longer be the mercenary he once was. His name became a whispered warning—his presence a symbol of death and despair.
But Varyn refused to accept his fate. Despite the darkness that consumed him, despite the whispers of Nightreaver, which urged him to embrace the shadow and become a creature of pure death, Varyn clung to a single hope. Somewhere, he believed, there had to be a way to break the curse. He began a new quest, one not for gold or glory, but for redemption. He sought out ancient tomes, lost relics, and those who might hold the key to his salvation.
It was during this quest that he heard of the Mirror of Dawn, an artifact said to hold the power to reveal one’s true self and break even the most unshakable curse. The mirror was hidden deep in the northern mountains, guarded by old magic and treacherous terrain. It was said that only the pure of heart could gaze into the mirror without being destroyed by their own reflection.
Though Varyn knew his soul had been tainted by the curse, he could not give up. The memory of sunlight—the dream of feeling its warmth on his skin again—was all that kept him going. The Black Knight now wandered the lands, cursed to walk in darkness, forever hunted by the daylight he longed to see again. His armor, black as night, became a symbol of dread wherever he traveled. Kingdoms feared him, not because of the battles he once fought, but because of the dark power he now carried.
His quest to see the light of day began, but whether he would find salvation—or lose himself entirely to the shadows—remained unknown.
