Origin Story
The moon hung low over the charred remains of the Fujiwara Clan, casting silver light upon blood-soaked earth. Among the corpses, one man still breathed. Wuji, the youngest of the clan’s samurai, knelt in silence. His black and white katana, symbol of balance and honor, lay across his knees. Around him, monsters from beyond the veil, twisted abominations of claw and fang had vanished into the night after their feast.
Tradition demanded seppuku. His clan was gone. His honor, defiled.
But something in Wuji rebelled.
“No,” he whispered, standing. “This is not the end. Not for me. Not for them.”
That night, he buried the dead and lit their pyres. Then, with blood still on his blade and vengeance in his heart, Wuji began a war.
He became a ghost, moving between villages and cursed forests, hunting anything not born of flesh and blood. Goblins in the mist, demons lurking beneath temples, shapeshifters preying on travelers none escaped him. With every kill, his katana drank deep. The white edge turned red, stained by the blood of his foes, while the black side grew darker still, reflecting the abyss growing within him.
Years passed. Tales of the Crimson Blade spread across the land. Children whispered his name as both a savior and a curse. Some praised him as a protector. Others feared him as a butcher.
Then came the dragon.
It descended from the skies as Wuji stood atop the bones of a slain hydra. Wings as wide as storm clouds. Scales like molten gold. Eyes like still water.
“You reek of rage,” the dragon said, its voice a rumble deeper than thunder.
Wuji raised his blade. “If you are not human, you will die.”
“I am no beast of shadow,” the dragon replied. “I am Renshu. Keeper of Balance. You and I are not so different, samurai.”
Wuji’s eyes narrowed. “I’ve no balance left to keep.”
Renshu studied him with ancient patience. “Once, your blade bore black and white. Now, red and black. You seek justice but have found only blood.”
“I have avenged my clan a hundred times over.”
“Have you? Or have you become what you once hunted?”
The dragon’s words struck like a blade to the gut. For the first time in years, Wuji faltered. His hands trembled.
Renshu knelt, massive and slow. “There is another path, warrior. One not of death, but of guarding life. There are creatures that mean no harm. Spirits that protect. Balance must be maintained.”
Wuji stared at his katana. Its crimson shimmered in the dying light, and he saw his reflection haunted, hollow.
“What must I do?” he whispered.
“Unlearn vengeance. Seek wisdom. Walk with the blade sheathed.”
And so, Wuji followed the dragon.
At dawn, Renshu brought Wuji to a hidden valley veiled in clouds, where an ancient stronghold stood carved into the mountainside. Weathered stone towers rose like silent sentinels, and a great gate bore the emblem of a silver wolf coiled around a rising sun. “This is the Azurite Fraternite” the dragon said, his voice low with reverence. “They are warriors, scholars, hunters, and guardians. Like you, many came here broken. They found purpose beyond blood.”
