Origin Story
Aldren Voss has never cared much for where people think he came from. He’s claimed different birthplaces over the years whenever it made life easier, and after enough time even he stopped worrying about which version was closest to the truth. What never changes is that he was raised in a bustling port where merchants wielded more influence than nobles, fortunes could be won or lost before sunset, and every deal carried a hidden cost. His father was a skilled metalworker who crafted locks and mechanisms, while his mother managed ledgers for wealthy trading houses. From them, Aldren learned that competence mattered more than appearances and that a person’s word, once broken, was difficult to earn back.
Restless by nature, he left home young and spent years drifting from one contract to the next. He guarded caravans, crewed merchant vessels, and took whatever honest work kept food in his pack. Not every job was clean. Some cargo was never meant to appear on a manifest, and some employers preferred questions remain unasked. Aldren accepted more than a few of those contracts, but he never lost sight of a handful of boundaries he refused to cross. He would have nothing to do with slavers, would never willingly harm children, and walked away from any work that required innocent blood. Those choices cost him opportunities, but they also earned him a reputation as someone whose word could be trusted even when his morals weren’t spotless.
Years on the road taught him that wars are rarely fought by the people who pay the highest price for them. He has watched kingdoms rise and fall, buried friends in foreign soil, and seen enough ambitious rulers to distrust anyone who promises glory through conquest. Time sanded away whatever youthful idealism he once possessed, replacing it with patience, practicality, and a quiet appreciation for simple decency. He values fair bargains, honest company, and people who keep their promises when no one is watching. Though he owns little beyond a well-used blade, sturdy boots, and a weathered coat, he carries the weight of countless roads traveled and choices made.
Aldren has never pretended to be a hero. He has lied for coin, protected questionable clients, and looked the other way when it was easier than asking difficult questions. Those compromises are part of who he is. Yet when the past returns in quiet moments, it is rarely the things he did that trouble him most. Instead, he remembers the moments when he convinced himself that doing nothing was somehow different from making a choice. Those regrets have shaped him more than any battle ever could, leaving behind a man who is slow to judge, careful with his promises, and determined not to repeat the mistakes that still linger in his conscience.
